Being in the industry for over 30 years has opened our eyes to a lot of concerns people have about chemicals in cosmetic products.  Plus it means that ever since then we have been literally addicted to grabbing bottles and scanning the long lists of chemical names on the labels and finding that some of them actually make sense.

Not all are comprehensible.  Although the packaging on a product may scream that it’s free from some compound or other that’s currently causing concern, a scan of the ingredients list will reveal that the hated chemical IS actually present in another slightly different form. Sulfate in all its forms is an ingredient HATED  by lots of you – it can cause reaction, rashes and irritation to skin.  Because it’s cheap it’s added to many cosmetic products – think anything foamy – it works really well to make suds and bubbles.  You can also find it in loads of cheap cleansers, soaps and handwashes.  Look out for the ingredients sodium laureth sulfate or sodium laurel sulfate (SLS and SLES).

So we know lots of you are on an everlasting hunt for a good sulfate free shampoo – here’s one to add to your list.  There’s a big craze at the moment for hair products which nourish and revive hair naturally without the use of silicones.  Using naturally occurring oils like argan oil (Certified Organic Argan Oil Shampoo and Conditioner pack) and olive oil which can actually penetrate hair’s lipid structure and enrich deeply.

  • Less is more, way more. Use a twenty cent sized dollop of shampoo, max. It’s not conditioner that causes buildup; it’s really your cleanser. Invest in a quality shampoo, your hair will love you for it.
  • Don’t be so gentle. Take hands straight to the back of your head ad vigorously scrub your scalp for at least 3 minutes. Less product, more action. Consider it an aquatic triceps workout.
  • Conditioner is strictly for hair only. Avoid your scalp at all costs (or suffer limp-noodle syndrome). Lightly graze your fingertips over the top of your head. That’s it.
  • Stop stressing over a wide-tooth comb. It’s a myth. A bristle brush will work just fine. Just remember to run it through your hair before rinsing out the conditioner.

Round, Oval, Heart? Flattering Hairstyles by Face Shape

In  response to clients’ queries, we wanted to share guidelines on flattering hairstyles by face shapes. No matter your face shape – round, oval, square, heart or long – there will be haircuts that look best on you. How do you find and choose a haircut that balances your facial features and creates a natural symmetry between your face and hair? The goal and purpose of this guide is to help you find the most flattering hairstyles.

Before we start, please note Vault Hair’s cardinal rule: Get the Haircut that Makes You Feel Good About Yourself.

When you read about hairstyles and face shapes, you may feel inundated by rules: women with long faces should never wear long hair! Got a round face? Never go short! yadda, blah, yadda, blah.

While these are guidelines for flattering haircuts, they are really just that: guidelines. The secret to looking gorgeous is really in one’s attitude. The last thing you, or we, want, for you to do is to get a haircut that makes you feel unlike yourself.

# Find your face shape

Knowing the shape of your face will make your style choices easier and will also help you to communicate better with your hairstylist. And good communication is key to a successful outcome at the salon!

  • Stand in front of a mirror. Pull your hair completely back and secure with a clip.
  • Take a easy to wipe marker-pen and draw around the outline of your face on the mirror.
  • Compare the result with one of the following shapes and find the face shape that is closest to yours.

# Heart Face – Wider at forehead and hairline, and narrowing down to a small pointy chin.

Haircut & Style: layered bob with extra volume and outward flicks at chin level. Asymmetric cuts are also flattering. Curls and waves are helpful. The best length is chin-length or longer. Adding wispy bangs will enhance the overall look and balance the wider forehead. Adding height and volume around the temple may not be flattering.

# ROUND FACE – wide, short forehead, full jaw and round chin.

Haircut & Style: the round shape normally makes the cheeks appear wider. Most short hair cuts works well for round face as long as there is some height at the crown area and little fullness above the ears to slim down the round face. Soft cuts with sophisticated layers coming forward onto the face look stylish and is an ideal hair style. Soft curls will also flatter. For straight hair, asymmetric cuts can also be an option. Rule of thumb: Consider any style that could break the symmetry and roundness of your face.

# SQUARE FACE – a wide, short forehead with a square jaw that is in line with your cheekbones.

Haircut & Style: square edges can be softened by breaking the symmetry of a square shape (off-centre parting and side curves). Graduated layers with some volume at crown and soft curls looks stylish on this type of face shape. Avoid straight, blunt or heavy bangs.

# LONG (OBLONG) FACE – with high forehead and long jaw and chin.

Haircut & Style: You can create more width for long straight hair with bangs – blunt bangs to long, side swept bangs. Chin length bobs are also ideal because they create the illusion of width. Consider the uber-trendy long bob which is very flattering. Ask your stylist for an “A-line Long Bob” where the back is about 1.5 inches shorter than the front. If you like short hair, avoid short layers that add volume on top. Long straight hair is typically a no-no on a long face shape because it drags the face down. However, you can  break this “no long hair” rule if you have waves or curls which adds body and width to the sides of the face.

# OVAL FACE – high forehead and narrow, slightly rounded chin.

Haircut & Style: this is the most balanced face shape and almost perfect for any length and type of hairstyle. Just consider styles that work best for your hair type and age.

Sexy long hair styling tip

Daisy Fluentes - long hair styling how to

Daisy Fluentes – long hair styling how to

Looking to give your hair a break from the demands of the hair straightening iron? This highlighted hair-do has waves added to the mid-lengths to ends then worn over one shoulder for a sexy look and feel best suited to compliment a long face. This is an easy hairstyle to re-create at home with the right tools and products and great for any occasion.

Suits oval, oblong and square face shapes with medium to thick hair density.

Styling time: 30 minutes ladies

Products: Using Xcessive Range: spherical hold cream/mousse, identity velcro putty wax, refinement serum and location arrangement hair spray

Styling tip: apply your smoothing shine to the top sections and then work it all the way down to the end to soften this style.

Styling Steps

1. Apply spherical hold cream or mousse to damp hair, using your palm as a measuring guide and then evenly distribute it along the hair shaft. Styling mousse will add hold, create volume and can help achieve better results.

2. Part to the Left. You can choose to use the corner of your comb, find the middle of your left eye and then drag the comb straight up slowly until you reach your hairline and then continue back in a straight manner to achieve an even left part or just use your fingertips and zig zag your fingers through your hair on a side part to achieve a softer look. A side part is great for longer face shapes because it creates an illusion of width

Radial Brush
3. Using a large radial brush on long straight hair types or to smooth out wavy or curly hair textures. When selecting a radial brush, always use one with a pure bristle as this will not tear or damage the hair.

4. Blow-dry the Back Under. To blow-dry under, start at the nape/back and place your brush under the section of hair close to the nape. With the dryer held up over the hair pull the brush from the roots and continue to the mid-lengths, keeping the blow-dryer following over the top. Once you reach the ends, curve them under. Repeat this step until the section is completely dry.

SidesUnder5. Blow-dry the Sides Under. To blow-dry the sides, take out a small section of hair from the front and clip the rest of the hair away. Next, [;ace the brush under the section and then pull the brush and hair forward around your face (this curving motion creates body). Place the hair-dryer on top of the brush until you reach the ends and then turn the ends under. Repeat until dry.

6. Place Medium Velcro Rollers in Hair. Take a section of hair no wider than the diameter of the velcro roller and comb it through to ensure there are no knots. Place the roller at the ends of the section of hair, being sure to smooth the ends under, and then twist the roller down the hair shaft to the roots. Continue applying the velcro rollers all the way through the entire hair for a full volume finish throughout the sides. Keep the rollers in your hair for about 20 minutes.

SidePinBack7. Pin the side back. Take your section of hair and pull it tightly across the opposite side and pin it securely into place.

8. Apply a small amount of identity velcro putty wax to your fingertips and then lightly piece and pinch the ends of your hair.

9. Apply a very small amount of Refinement Serum to the palms of your hands and then run it through the mid-lengths and ends of your hair. Be careful not to add any to the roots or a large amount to any section of the hair as smoothing shine can be very heavy on the hair, weighing it down and making it appear oily.

10. To finish, apply a small amount of Location Arrangement Spray from an arms length distance to the top, sides and back. Take care not to use too much or your will end up with a white, flaky residue which looks like dandruff.

Revisit the bob with Vault Hair

With all the beautiful stars on the red carpet it can be hard to have your hair stand out, but Marion Cottilard had no problem doing so with this stunning asymmetrical style. A deep side part, side sweeping bangs, and the most amazing chocolate colour make this hairstyle fabulous. Slicking the shorter side of her cut behind her ear adds the sophisticated icing on top of the cake.

Sexy Pixie great hairstyle tips

anne-hathaway-hair-how-toIt can be really hard to make short hair look interesting sometimes ~ it’s all about the cut. So, after watching Les Misérables and seeing her (photo attached) at the National Board of Review Gala in NYC where her sexy pixie had a bit more of an edgy rocker chic feel, I knew I had to share!

1. Blow dry hair while shaping with it to one side with fingers to ensure the natural texture stays intact

2. Spritz the hair evenly with Xcessive Volume Spray for added “gut”

3. Once the hair is completely dry, use a GHD ionic straightener on individual sections to enhance the hair and bring out the straighter, rock-chic feel of the look.

4. Mist some Xcessive Finishing Mist Spray directly on your fingers and define single strands without weighing your hair down. The spray stays on really light and will let your hair look and feel natural, even though it has a strong hold level
